N.Y. college student from Mass. dies in Del. frat accident
NEWARK, Del. - Newark police say they do not suspect foul play in the death of a man who fell off the roof of an off-campus fraternity house at the University of Delaware.
Twenty-year-old Willem Golen, a freshman at Skidmore College in New York, died Saturday, according to an online announcement by Skidmore President Philip Glotzbach.
Newark police who were called to the house near the University of Delaware campus found Golden unresponsive. Authorities have not said why Golden was on the roof or whether alcohol was a factor in the fall.
The house is associated with members of Sigma Pi fraternity.
A university spokeswoman said Monday that the house is not a registered fraternity house, but that members of the fraternity live there and have hosted rush events in the past at that location. She also noted that it is not uncommon for members of a fraternity or sorority to live in a rental house together, and that because of Newark zoning ordinances that prohibit fraternity houses, most UD fraternities do not have registered houses.
Meanwhile, Newark police on Monday released statistics regarding enforcement activities related to the St. Patrick's Day holiday, which is traditionally associated with parties and drinking around the UD campus.
Authorities said 23 additional Newark officers were on duty on Saturday, March 12, and 22 additional officers were working Saturday, March 19, compared to the normal complement of six officers. Agents with the state division of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement and Newark code enforcement office also assisted police.
Authorities made 20 criminal arrests on March 12 and 58 criminal arrests on March 19, the majority of them alcohol-related.
