New photo software can morph faces like Michael Jackson's "Black or White" video

(CBS) - You know how you can make photo slideshows? Well doing so just got cooler.

"We can easily summarize a person's life in photos," Ira Kemelmacher-Shlizerman, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington who led the study, told New Scientist.

So okay, the video above is kind of mind-numbingly boring, but you have to admit, the groundbreaking effects of this new software are pretty cool...

Morph faces like Michael Jackson's 1991 "Black or White" music video. And, pull photos of a specific person or a collection of tagged photos and link them together to see how people have aged over the years (an example is a girl growing from birth to age 20 in two minutes), or to turn frowns into smiles and vice versa.

So neat! Wedding, engagement and birthday videos and presentations come to mind.

Kemelmacher-Shlizerman is going to present the work in a paper at SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group on Graphics and Interactive Techniques), a conference in Vancouver, Canada, next week, reports New Scientist.

A "lite" version of the software is available on photo-hosting site Picasa, called Face Movie.
