Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka are engaged

(CBS) - Actor Neil Patrick Harris and longtime partner David Burtka are ready to make their relationship official.

A day after New York's state senate passed the Marriage Equality Bill on Friday, the 38-year-old "How I Met Your Mother" star revealed on Twitter that he and Burtka, 36, are engaged.

"David and I did propose to each other, but over five years ago!" he confirmed. "We've been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date."

"I've already [purposed], he said yes! Thank god!" Burkta said after a Twitter follower suggested he should pop the question to Harris. 

The couple, who have been together for about 6 years, are co-parents to 6-month-old fraternal twins, Gideon Scott and Harper Grace.
