(CBS/AP) PERDIDO KEY, Fla. - Authorities are investigating the death of a naked, one-legged man who reportedly collapsed after allegedly trying to break into a neighbor's home in Perdido Key, Fla. late Monday.

Prior to his death, Norbert Chabannes, 55, was seen crawling across a yard in the neighborhood near Pensacola, witnesses say, according to The Pensacola News-Journal. The neighbors told deputies he cut his arm while unsuccessfully trying to break into his next door neighbor's house. That's when they said he crawled across the street and threw a cinder block at a home.

An Escambia County Sheriff's deputy found Chabannes delirious in the front yard. The deputy says Chabannes collapsed while he was trying to reason with him.

Rescue crews tried to resuscitate him but were unsuccessful.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating because Chabannes died while involved in a confrontation with a deputy.

According to the paper, authorities frequented Chabannes' home and he had been arrested for cocaine possession and possession of drug paraphernalia in the past.

The paper reports further investigation by law enforcement revealed Chabannes had become confrontational with his housekeeper earlier Monday. He allegedly gouged her eyes and banged her head repeatedly on a wall before she was able to flee.
