MTV To Rock The Met (1999)

What do MTV and the Metropolitan Opera House have in common? Very little, until Thursday night that is.

That's when the world-famous opera house at Lincoln Center in New York City plays host to the MTV Video Music Awards, reports CBS News This Morning Co-Anchor Mark McEwen.

When you go to the Met, you expect to hear Tosca or Aida, but this week, a different kind of diva has taken over the grand opera hall.

All week groups like TLC have been rehearsing to make music history. This is the first time ever the Met has played host to an awards show.

Chairs that are used to house opera titles will feature performers' lyrics. And in keeping with MTV's somewhat twisted style, ad campaigns feature Janet Jackson as Cleopatra, Madonna as Norma and David Bowie as Mephistopheles.

According to executive producer Salli Frattini, the austere setting won't stop MTV from pushing the envelope.

Chris Rock is scheduled to host the show where TLC is up for six awards. And scheduled performers include Ricky Martin, Lauryn Hill and the Backstreet Boys.
