Mr. Kelly's Wild Ride
Irish actor David Kelly, who is past 70, had the ride of his life when he filmed Waking Ned Devine. He told the story to CBS This Morning Co-Anchor Mark McEwen at New York's O'Flaherty's Restaurant.
In the movie, Kelly and Ian Bannon play two lifelong friends in a small Irish hamlet who discover that one of their fellow villagers has won the lottery. But they don't know who the winner is.
Then they find out that neighbor Ned Devine is the winner, but he has dropped dead from the shock of his good fortune. So the two old friends decide to mislead the lottery officials and claim the money anyway.
Kelly's wild ride comes when a lottery official stops at the beach to ask his character where Devine lives.
"So I get into the helmet, jump on the motorbike, and ride like clappers to Ned's house to get there before they do - stark naked except with the helmet," he recalls. He says the helmet was very heavy and he had never been on a motorcycle before.
"I was terrified," he says. "I've never driven anything. I had a pair of skates when I was very small. That was it. And I can't swim."
So, of course, his other nude scene in the movie involved skinny-dipping in the ocean.
