Move Over Oprah — Here Comes Babs

(CBS/AP)
Only a day after Barack Obama's campaign announced that talk-show host/entertainment mogul Oprah Winfrey would hit the trail on his behalf, Hillary Clinton is hitting back with some star power of her own: an endorsement from Grammy and Oscar award-winner Barbra Streisand.

"Madame President of the United States...it's an extraordinary thought. We truly are in a momentous time, where a woman's potential has no limitations," Streisand said in a release. "Hillary Clinton has already proven to a generation of women that there are no limits for success. She is driven by her passion for public service and her belief in the enormous potential of our country."

Streisand, a longtime Democratic activist, performed at the inauguration gala of Bill Clinton. Though the endorsement is not much of a surprise, Streisand appeared uncertain earlier in the year, giving money to Clinton rivals Barack Obama and John Edwards, the Associated Press reports.

"I'm honored to have Barbra's support," Clinton said in the release. "Barbra has used her immense talent to be an advocate for truth, justice, and fairness and I deeply appreciate her confidence in my candidacy as we work together to change the direction of our nation."

The endorsement will probably open Clinton up to jokes from conservative pundits, who see Streisand as a bit of a bogeywoman: When John McCain hosted Saturday Night Live in 2002, he appeared in a fake commercial promoting his off-key covers of Streisand songs, saying "I've been in politics for over 20 years. And for over 20 years, I've had Barbra Streisand trying to do my job. So I decided to try my hand at her job."
