Peter Norton Family Christmas Art Projects

Price: $6,200

Just because you’re not on Peter Norton’s gift list doesn’t mean you can’t score a stash of his coveted stocking-stuffers from the Museum of Modern Art’s MoMA Store. Each year since 1988, Norton, the software pioneer, philanthropist and contemporary-art collector has commissioned an up-and-coming artist to create a small original work. Between 2,300 and 3,000 copies are then produced and sent to about 2,000 of Norton’s personal contacts. Over the years the leftover pieces had begun to pile up, so in 2009 Norton donated most of his remainders to the Museum of Modern Art, which sells them online. So far this year the store has sold 15 sets of 21 projects, which include a dollhouse (2002) by Yinka Shonibare and a music box (2003) by Christian Marclay. Each individual item is suitable for regifting — or reselling.
