Moises Meraz-Espinoza, Calif. man, gets 25 years in death, dismemberment of mom
(CBS/AP) LOS ANGELES - Moises Meraz-Espinoza, a 21-year-old Los Angeles County man, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the first-degree murder of his mother, whose dismembered remains were found in a freezer in their apartment.
CBS Los Angeles reports authorities believe the murder may have been related to a Satanic worship because a Satanic bible containing a human sacrifice chapter was found inside the suspect's home. Police say the suspect also got a tattoo of a Satanic cross behind his left ear while in prison.
Prior to sentencing on Wednesday, Judge Thomas McKnew Jr. told Meraz-Espinoza that the killing was one of the "most disgusting, hideous, vulgar" cases he has ever come across.
Meraz-Espinoza was convicted in June of killing his 42-year-old mother Amelia Espinoza in 2011.
Prosecutors say Meraz-Espinoza, who was 18 at the time, asphyxiated his mother, skinned her with knives and dismembered her with a saw. Her organs were never found.
He put bones including her skull with upside-down crosses carved in it in his backpack, and put the rest of her remains in the freezer.
He turned himself in to police two days later.
