"I am sorry that I was not there to protect you," Young wrote in the letter. "I will never be able to forgive myself for being so many hours away when you needed me the most."
CBS affiliate KOIN published the letter in its entirety on their website Monday.
Kyron vanished June 4, and his stepmother, Terri Horman, has figured prominently in the investigation since then, because authorities say she was the last known person to see him alive.
It's been reported that Kyron attended the school's science fair that day with his stepmother, who says she last saw him walking down the hallway in the direction of his classroom. Horman called 911 after Kyron did not return home on his school bus.
Investigators say over 350 people have responded to a questionnaire regarding the stepmother, according to KOIN. Among the questions on the form, which were filled out by parents and neighbors last week, one asked if they saw Horman at or near the school on June 4. Another asks if anyone saw her white Ford F250 pickup truck.
Jaymie Finster, who has known Horman since junior high, told The Oregonian that Horman already took one polygraph test and was scheduled for a second.
The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office declined to confirm the friend's claim and won't say who has or has not been given a lie-detector test.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Kyron Horman is asked to call the Multnomah County Sheriff's tip line at 503-261-2847.
