(CBS) ATLANTIC CITY - Enhanced security procedures are in  effect at the 2013 Miss America competition held in Atlantic City, N.J., and noisemakers, fireworks, Frisbees and diaper bags are on the list of prohibited items, CBS Philly reports.

Alcoholic beverages, controlled substances, cans, bottles, recording devices and large handbags are also on the list of non-no's inside the pageant's Boardwalk Hall.

The policies are intended to provide a safer, more enjoyable environment for fans, the station reports. The measures are comparable to the policy put into effect at NFL stadiums for the new season.

"We understand that some of our guests may be unhappy with these restrictions, but our obligation to ensure fan safety and comfort is paramount," said Greg Tesone, General Manager of Boardwalk Hall. "Our intent is not to inconvenience any patrons, but to deliver an entertainment experience that meets or exceeds our guests' expectations, and that includes their well-being."

Guests are to be subject to bag checks, a physical search and metal detector screening prior to entering the venue.

Clutch-type handbags are permitted - as well as clear bags (no larger than 12" x 12"). Yes, they're serious.

The competition got underway Tuesday. This year's winner will be crowned Sunday night.
