(NEW YORK (CBS) During a week characterized by couture that is more fanciful than wearable, Michelle Smith's Milly Spring/Summer 2011 ready-to-wear collection, which debuted at The Stage at Lincoln Center, provided both some respite and a breath of fresh air.

Since launching in 2001, the young designer and busy mother has stayed true to her sensibilities, creating silhouettes that are stylish and edgy, yet possess a timeless quality that make her designs sought-after staples by today's modern woman.

Bold geometrics mixed with feminine florals in rich hues on the runway. Dominating the bright palette were vivid tomato reds, vibrant greens and yellows, and a muted navy. The collection focused on contrasts. Cropped jackets mixed with long skirts and fitted floral Bermuda shorts; full, longer-length skirts were paired with slim bodices; and fitted sheath dresses were complemented by statement coats. Bold embellishments punctuated the luxurious look of her affordable designs.

I spoke to Smith backstage before the start of the show and asked where she found her inspiration. "I looked to Peggy Guggenheim after I read a book about her life," the designer answered. "She was my inspiration." When she puts together a line, Smith says, she always thinks of clothes she, herself, as a busy working woman and mom, would wear. "It has to be functional" she said.

A highlight of the show was both the Milly costume jewelry line and the handbag line. Her jewelry incorporates chunky, texturally rich statement pieces using materials as diverse as wood and agate. Gold chains and rope also permeate the collection.

Handbags featured full-grain leathers, including shiny goatskin and tumbled nappa lambskin. Custom-made hardware and bold tortoise and metal chains helped complete the look.

The designer's sensual, smart collection that has led to an ever-growing client base that now includes such notables such as Beyonce and fashion insiders like Victoria Beckham and Gwyneth Paltrow.
