Microsoft Unveils Vista Payback Program

vista-logo.jpgIn response to sluggish Vista sales, Microsoft announced today the Vista Payback Program, which effectively pays users to adopt the much-maligned operating system.

"We believe that once users get some hands-on time with Vista, they'll fall in love with it," said Microsoft marketing VP Bob Loblaw. "That's why we're so excited about this program."

Here's how it works: After you buy a retail copy of Windows Vista or a new PC with Vista preinstalled, you visit the Payback Program Web site and enter the supplied activation code. In 6-8 weeks you'll receive a check for $137.50, an amount calculated by Microsoft to be commensurate with the "initial frustration and lost productivity associated with adopting Vista."

In other words, if you're willing to put up with slower system performance, a lack of legacy drivers, the incredibly annoying User Account Control, and no worthwhile new features to speak of, you can pocket $137.50 for your troubles. (Thanks, but I'll stick with XP.) The program expires on March 31, 2009.
