Michael Alexander Szoke, 11, killed by 8-year-old brother in accidental shooting, police say
(CBS) PYLESVILLE, Md. - A Maryland family is in mourning after the death of an 11-year-old boy who was killed after he and his 8-year-old brother got their hands on a loaded gun, CBS Baltimore reports. Michael Alexander Szoke died early Saturday morning in the Pylesville community of Harford County.
Harry Kiel told CBS Baltimore that his grandsons Michael and his 8-year-old brother got a gun from a neighbor and were playing with it in the woods when the gun went off.
"They played. They did everything together. It was just a freak thing," Kiel said. "The bullet hit the tree. It came back and hit Mikey."
Police said their investigation revealed something different. The gun was reportedly in a secured shed, which the neighbor opened up so the brothers could get equipment to do yard work.
"The 8-year-old accidentally shot the 11-year-old with a gun that was found," said Harford County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Monica Worrell.
Michael died on the way to the hospital. Police said there are no plans to file any charges.
"Don't let this happen to anyone else's kids. Please people, protect them," Kiel said, believing the gun wasn't secured enough from his grandsons.
"I want to love my kids, not bury them," he continued. "I cried all night long. I really did."
