McCain: Huckabee "Has Every Right To Remain" In GOP Race

(CBS)
From CBS News' Dante Higgins:

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As Mike Huckabee continues his uphill bid for the Republican nomination, John McCain repeated is respect for the former Arkansas governor and refused to call him a spoiler.

After a rally at the Virginia Aviation Museum, McCain was asked to respond to accusations made by Huckabee that the Republican establishment was trying to rig this election for McCain.

"We will have a fair election here in Virginia tomorrow and I think we will have a fair election in Maryland and in the District of Columbia. I have not heard of any reason except that I know we are going through a process. I know that I have a sizeable lead in delegates, but we're not quitting. We're not easing off. We're not taking anything for granted. I respect Governor Huckabee. I respect him staying in the race and I intend to compete with him as we move forward in the process," he said.

When asked if Huckabee was hurting the party by staying in the race, McCain passed the buck. "Oh no, I don't know. I think that's something that others should judge. I think Governor Huckabee has every right to remain just as long as he feels necessary to do so."
