Material Girl's New London Pad
Madonna is trying to become another beautiful stranger in one of London's celebrity neighborhoods, reports CBS News Correspondent Mark Phillips. Pity the poor real estate agents who have spent more than a year trying to find her a new home.
"I can't testify as to her willingness to actually buy any of the houses she saw," said London realtor Ed Mead. "Evidently she was a bit choosey. Nothing wrong with that."
Nothing wrong with that except that after showing Madonna all those houses, the real estate agents got stiffed out of their fat commissions when she bought in a private deal.
The house may not be anything special by showbiz standards, but it is a substantial London property in a desirable neighborhood, as they say in the ads.
It is in an area where celebrities have celebrities for neighbors. Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley are just up the street. David Bowie is around the corner and even the longtime landed classes have learned to mislead mysterious groupies.
"She doesn't live around here," Lady Ridsdale, Madonna's new neighbor, said. "That's the way we are here."
There goes the neighborhood.
