Maryland mom charged with suffocating her children

CHEVERLY, Md. - Police have charged a 24-year-old Maryland woman with murder in the death of her two children, reports CBS Baltimore.

Sonya Spoon is facing two counts of first-degree murder after Prince George's County police responded to a frantic 911 call and found her two children - 3-year-old Kayla Thompson and 1-year-old Ayden Spoon - barely breathing at their home in Cheverly just after 2 a.m. Sunday, according to the station.

"The children were removed and taken to a local hospital, where they have both been pronounced deceased," said Det. Bernard Jones, Cheverly Police spokesperson.

Police said Spoon admitted to suffocating the children.

"My two oldest woke me up when they noticed all the flashing lights from the police cars and ambulances that were out here," a neighbor told CBS Baltimore. "They kind of made a big commotion because they saw one of the children being brought out."

"You hear about kids having accidents all the time and your heart goes out to the families," said another neighbor. "But then with situations like this, it's a hard pill to swallow."

"There's no need for the community to be afraid," Det. Jones said, according to the station. "This doesn't appear to be a random act and detectives are working on a motive at this time."

Spoon is currently being held without bond. The station reports police do not yet have a motive for the crime.
