Marty Reeves, Ga. father, arrested for apparent murder of his wife and teenage son
(CBS/AP) JEFFERSON, Ga. - A father from northeast Georgia was arrested on Wednesday after police found his wife and teenage son shot dead in a home about 20 miles northwest of Athens.
Marty Reeves, 47, has been charged with the murder of his 42-year-old wife, Andrea Reeves, and his 13-year-old son, Austin Reeves. According to police, the two victims died from gunshot wounds.
CBS Atlanta reported that the crime took place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. The police said the suspect was detained immediately once police arrived on the scene.
The station said that many residents found the apparent double-homicide shocking.
"I'm surprised, especially it being Jefferson. You hardly ever here of something like that happening around here," said Leslie Hopkins, a woman who works in the area.
Hopkins was especially disheartened by the fact that the murder involved a teenager, stating, "That's really sad. Kids are precious and they don't do anything to offend anybody, at least not to the point where you have to kill them."
According to CBS Atlanta, there was some talk within the Jefferson community that Marty Reeves suffered from mental illness. Police did not confirm this, nor did they comment on a potential motive.
Reeves has been booked into the Jackson County jail.
