Martha Stewart says "OITNB" is "not as good as the real thing"
Hey Netflix, guess what? Martha Stewart has seen "Orange is the New Black," and she is not impressed.
The domestic diva and noted ex-con was quizzed on the award-winning women-in-prison streaming series by Chelsea Handler during a recent interview on Handler's own Netflix show, "Chelsea," and Stewart did not mince her words.
"It's not as good as the real thing," Stewart said, comparing "OITNB" to her own time in prison. "When you live through something like 'Orange Is the New Black,' the real characters are better."
Maybe she isn't pleased that there's a new character on the show based on her. Stewart spent five months behind bars in 2005 on fraud and insider trading charges.
Speaking of television, if Stewart has one gripe about her incarceration it was her access to the tube. "In prison, it was BET television at all times. I had to get up really early to watch the news," she said. "There's only one TV available and you have to sit in hard chairs and look up like this [cranes her neck] at the TV. So if I wanted to watch the stock market and stuff like that, I had to get up really early and watch it by myself."
When it comes to her taste in television outside of prison, Stewart seems to focus more on what she doesn't watch than what she does. While she told Handler that she enjoys "House of Cards" and "The Blacklist," she made a point of mentioning other popular series she's sure to avoid, like "Game of Thrones."
"I've never watched 'The Borgias' either because I can't stand torture," she said. "I've never watched that horrible, horrible [show] about the crystal-meth guys ['Breaking Bad']. Never watched it. I can't. They're such ugly people."
