Marine Corps Marathon: Bradosky, Cherobon Win

Jacob Bradosky of Centerville, Ohio, and Janet Cherobon of Rome, Ga., won the men's and women's divisions of the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday.

Bradosky, a second lieutenant at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, was running his first marathon. He completed the 26.2 miles in 2 hours, 23 minutes, 30 seconds. Ronald Kurui of Ellicott City, Md., was second in 2:23:41.

Cherobon, who has won six straight marathons, won in 2:39:19. She was followed by Navy Lt. Gina Slaby of Tucson, Ariz., in 2:46:58.

"I was a little disappointed with my time, but I'm overly happy with the win," Cherobon said.

The race featured 30,000 runners on a course that started and ended near the Iwo Jima Memorial. The route went through Georgetown, past the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, the U.S. Capitol and around the Pentagon. There were more than 100 registered wheelchair and hand-cycle participants.

Temperatures were in the 50s at the start on an overcast day. Bradosky made his move during the 21st mile and pulled away from the lead pack. Kurui stayed on Bradosky's heels until the final half mile. Kurui said he lost about two minutes when he fell after about five miles and scuffed his right elbow.

U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Sean Barrett of Camp Lejeune, N.C., finished third in his marathon debut in 2:24:08.

"Only in the Marine Corps Marathon is the finish at the top of a hill, right?" Barrett said. "I was doing the survivor's shuffle to the finish."
