Man Sinks Putt For $1 Million

British Airways executive Woody Harford was a little late getting home to his 2-year-old daughter Tuesday night but he had a good excuse. He was busy golfing - and winning a million dollars.

Harford, a "weekend golfer" with a 19 handicap, won the money when he sunk a 100-foot putt at a Central Park party that was held to celebrate the launch of the new golf magazine - Maximum Golf.

"I hit an 80-foot putt this weekend so I figured, why not try it?" said Harford, 36, moments after checked in with his daughter's baby sitter. "I told her I was going to be a little later than I thought." A little later and a little richer.

Five people missed the putt before Harford won the competition, which was sponsored by Maximum Golf. "We wanted the everyday golfer to feel the thrill that is usually reserved for the pros. We are thrilled to be able to give away $1 million," said Michael Caruso, editor-in-chief of Maximum Golf. "Today, I think Woody feels like Tiger Woods does after winning the Masters."

Celebrity competitors in attendance included Donald Trump, television personality Maury Povich and former New York Ranger Rod Gilbert.

Harford said he planned to take his family and friends golfing with his winnings. That should be some trip. Even at $100 a round that gives Harford another 10,000 rounds of golf in his future.
