Man goes on stabbing spree in Ibiza, injures 11
MADRID - A man with a knife apparently went berserk and stabbed 11 people at random on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza on Wednesday, officials said.
Six of the victims required hospital treatment after the assault in the town of Sant Antoni, and two of them are in serious condition, a Civil Guard official said.
The assailant cut himself in the throat as police arrested him, the police official said. An earlier overall toll gave the number of injured as 13.
Ibiza is part of Spain's Balearic Islands, among Europe's most popular vacation sites. It was not immediately known if any of the stabbing victims were foreigners.
The official said the assailant was 41-year-old Moroccan and the motive of the attack was unknown, but that the man may have been mentally disturbed. A police statement said he lived in Sant Antoni and had money problems.
The official said the attacker started stabbing people at random in a supermarket, then went outside and continued slashing people as he walked down the street. Police eventually subdued him.
The official spoke from Sant Antoni on condition of anonymity in line with department rules.
