Man dies while in police custody in Olympia
OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Olympia Police Department says a man has died while in police custody at a local bus station.
The man has not yet been identified, but police described him as a white male in his 30s or 40s.
Police said in a news release that employees at the Intercity station reported a man entered their locked administrative facilities and was acting violently, CBS affiliate KIRO reported.
The man was subdued, but broke free and then assaulted one of the staff members. When police arrived, the man calmed down and officers were able to escort him outside, according to the news release.
Once outside, the man reportedly became combative, kicking, and sitting on officers, KIRO reported. He was handcuffed and detained.
An officer later noticed that the man appeared ill, according to the police department. Medics who were already at the scene to treat the injured transit worker tried to perform life-saving measures on the man who was in custody, but he died.
Five officers were involved in the incident, according to the news release. The release said they have been put on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
The death is under investigation by the Thurston County Critical Incident Team.
The entire block of Washington Street fronting the bus station will be closed for hours, KIRO reported.
