Man arrested driving pregnant girlfriend to hospital
PITTSBURGH - A father missed the birth of his first child because, as he was driving his pregnant girlfriend to the hospital, he was arrested by police, reports CBS Pittsburgh.
Maceo Saunders,19, was driving his girlfriend, Shayla Crews, to the hospital last weekend when he flagged down a police car and asked for a police escort.
"He was scared she wasn't going to make it [to] the hospital," Michelle Kitchens, Crews' mother told the station.
Crews told CBS Pittsburgh the police officer said he was unable to escort them to the hospital, but would call an ambulance. Soon after, the police officer discovered Saunders was driving with a suspended license, according to the station.
"I was like, 'I'll drive cause I have a license,'" said Crews. "I said I don't care. I want him there!"
Instead, she was taken away in an ambulance and when Saunders tried to drive off to follow, he was pulled over and arrested, according to the station. Police say they also discovered there was an arrest warrant out for him on aggravated assault charges.
Saunders says he didn't know the warrant was active because he was recently released from a juvenile facility and told he was free to go. He said it stemmed from a bar fight, reports the station.
After being arraigned, he was released from jail on Tuesday and was able to meet his son for the first time.
They family says it was Jefferson Hills Police who made the arrest. CBS Pittsburgh tried repeatedly but was unable to reach anyone from the department Tuesday night.
