Make-Up Tips for Teens
By YAN WANG
NEW YORK (CBS) It's a rite of passage, just like getting a driver's license or a first kiss. But teenage girls discovering makeup can be a tricky time for parents. Most girls start by playing in front of their mother's vanity, piling on eye shadow, foundation, mascara, and the works and then washing it off before dinner. But while that kind of stage make up is cute and funny at home, what happens when she wants to take her new face for a test run at school? A few basic make up pointers help: Skin: Teenagers have beautiful skin, whether they believe or not. While acne might be an issue, there are specific face-washes and astringents that can take care of blemishes during sleep. Teens do not need foundation. It ages skin quickly, and often ends up clogging pores. Get your teen in the habit of daily SPF to protect her skin, and keep her looking radiant and young. Most moisturizers come with SPF 15 or 30. If her face has red spots or blemishes, a tinted moisturizer is the perfect way to even out skin tone without using anything heavy (these come with SPF as well.) Some great, affordable products are:-Neutrogena offers a great line of cleansers, toners, moisturizers.
-Clinique: tinted moisturizers with SPF 15
-ProActive cleansers are fantastic if blemishes are a problem for your teen's skin. They also offer a line of facemasks and nighttime skin conditioners. Eyes: Eye makeup is probably the most attractive aspect for teens just beginning to experiment with shades and styles. But when it comes to the eyes, less is more. A tip to remind your teen: Make-up should enhance the way your face naturally looks, not make you look like a completely different person. Some sheer creme shadow or a light powder topped with well-done eyeliner and mascara should be all they need for the day. Some of our favorites include: -Maybelline's New Great Big Lash, an amped-up version of a classic mascara that has lasted through the test of time. Not only does it do its job, it's affordable as well, plus the bright pink bottle livens up a purse or a bathroom counter.
-Physician's Formula offers the "Baked" Wet/Dry Shadow. These trios of colors look great for day time. For a school dance, simply dip the brush in water, and apply wet shadow for a bolder look.
-Sephora brand felt-tip pen liquid liner is the perfect combo. The liquid liner lasts all day, and doesn't smear during hot weather, but is easier to maneuver than a brush for the eyeliner newbies. Lips: When it comes to the mouth, natural is better, so typically a nice coat of chap stick should do. If that's just not enough to satisfy them, gloss is popular. Just stick to neutral shades. And if your teen insists on trying a "nude" lip look, make sure the lipstick is one shade darker than her skin tone, and always put liner on first. Some recommended lip products:
-Palmer's Cocoa Butter stick is the best protection against chapping. You get a big bang for your buck, and it makes your chapped lips feel great.
-Stila lip gloss is beautifully glossy, and has a longer wear time than most. They are slightly tinted for a bit of color.
-MAC has a collection called "To the Beach" which offers some fun, younger, brighter looks in case your teen is interested in something a little heavier than just lip gloss. Make sure to purchase lip wear in creme sheen instead of a matte color.
