Macrovision Buys Metadata Provider Muze For $16.5 Million

This story was written by David Kaplan.

Digital-distribution company Macrovision has bought entertainment discovery service Muze for $16.5 million in cash. Macrovision (NSDQ: MVSN) expects the transaction will add roughly $5 million to its 2009 revenue estimates, which it now projects to come in between $440 million and $480 million. The company anticipates the deal closing by the end of this month.

This is Santa Clara, Calif.-based Macrovision's first major purchase since jettisoning its TVGuide Network and TV Guide Online properties earlier this year in a sale to Lionsgate.

Muze should turn out to be a much more complementary acquisition for Macrovision than TV Guide was. The company plans to combine New York-based Muze's metadata services with its own as it seeks to expand its ability to managing digital entertainment search and purchasing functions.  Release
