St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne said Daniel Beckley, the last person to see 16-year-old Jorion White alive, has been charged with second-degree murder in her death and obstruction of justice for the way her body was disposed.

White was reported missing on April 22 and found in a ditch three days later. Authorities have not said what the cause of her death was, but they believe she was killed either early on April 22 or late on April 21.

Champagne said the death has been ruled a homicide but would not elaborate on what caused her death. He said the death of the girl, remembered by friends and family for her infectious smile, has hit both her family and those investigating the death hard.

"Some of the most unpleasant moments in our position come when we have to deal with people in the worst moments of their lives. I cannot imagine losing a teenage child," said Champagne.
