Living The High Life In Chicago

The story was originally broadcast on May 20, 2007.

Every year thousands of people from all over the world come to the observatory atop Chicago's John Hancock Building to enjoy spectacular views, the same views Jim and Nina McKechnie appreciate every day from the comfort of their own home on the Hancock's 80th floor.

The couple has been living in the apartment for 35 years and were sort of pioneers of high rise living. The McKechnies live in the ultimate skybox. Although on a clear day they can't quite see forever, they can see Milwaukee 90 miles to the north, planes fly by at what seems to be eye level, striking sunrises and sunsets illuminate the horizon. And even 80 floors above ground they see things alike this wind blown preying mantis, or even a spider or two.

At 100 stories the Hancock, built back in 1969 is the world's 15th tallest building, but it's the highest residential structure. Lower levels are office space, while upper floors house apartments. It has a gym and shops as well, a lot like any other neighborhood.

"We're our own (voting) precinct," Nina McKechnie said. "And there's very few buildings that can say that. You just — there's no excuse not to vote. You can down to the 44th floor and cast your ballot."
