Little Leaguers left in dark after theft of lights, copper wire, from So. Calif. field
(CBS) GRAND TERRACE, Calif. - Some Southern California Little Leaguers are feeling a little in the dark, after thieves broke into their field, and stole field lights along with $5,000 in copper wiring, a Grand Terrace Little League Board member told CBS Los Angeles.
Now, baseball players in the San Bernardino County community are on a fundraising pitch to once again let there be light so they can play at night.
"It's a bummer because, you know, we're doing this to give back to our kids. To do things to keep our kids off the street and provide them a safe haven to play and now they're out," Little League board member Robert Bond said.
Some 400 kids play in the league with games typically scheduled for twice a week in the evening, according to CBS Los Angeles.
The theft a few weeks ago has forced the kids to resort to only playing in the daytime resulting in double headers on Saturday.
The games help fund the league through sales from the concession stand without which thousands of dollars will be lost and the fate of next season could also be up in the air.
