Lieberman: Perry has made "very good first impressions"
Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman on Wednesday suggested he may back Texas Governor Rick Perry for president next year.
And it's not because they both used to be in Al Gore's camp.
Lieberman told Fox News that he has not decided who he will back this year, but he said Perry is making "some very good first impressions."
"I'm going to approach this 2012 election as the independent that I am and therefore I don't know who I'm going to support at this point," said Lieberman.
In 2008, Lieberman angered Democrats and liberals when he endorsed Republican Sen. John McCain over Barack Obama. Lieberman, who became in independent after he lost the Democratic primary to liberal challenger Ned Lamont in 2006 in order to keep his Senate seat, was then-Vice President Al Gore's running mate in the 2000 contest against George W. Bush.
Perry has shaken up the Republican primary race since announcing his bid for the presidency on Saturday.
The conservative Perry is a former Democrat who became a Republican in 1989. Perry served as Al Gore's Texas campaign chairman in the Tennessee politician's first bid for president in 1988.
