NEW YORK (CBS) "Law & Order: Los Angeles" takes the tried-and-true premise of the long running franchise and moves it to the West coast.

The series, which premiered Wednesday night on NBC, was announced just as the original "Law & Order" was canceled after 20 years on the air.

The new cast includes Skeet Ulrich and Corey Stoll, who play a pair of detectives, and Alfred Molina, who takes on the role of deputy district attorney.

Like the original (and all the spin-offs that followed), the show focuses on the detectives who investigate crimes and the district attorneys that prosecute them. But this edition instills some of the flash of its new city - the first episode features a ripped-from-the-headlines plot about a group of young thieves similar to the "bling ring" that robbed the homes of Paris Hilton and others.

Critics seem to be divided on the series. Some called the show a worthy heir to the now-departed original, while others have said that the new installment struggles to stay interesting and relevant.
