Last.fm investigating password leak following LinkedIn, eHarmony

(CBS) - Music website Last.fm is investigating a possible leak of users' passwords, following recent password breaches at business social network LinkedIn and online dating service eHarmony.

"We are currently investigating the leak of some Last.fm user passwords," a Last.fm blog post published Thursday states. "This follows recent password leaks on other sites, as well as information posted online. As a precautionary measure, we're asking all our users to change their passwords immediately."

The post continues stating the site would never email its users a direct link to update any personal settings or ask for to disclose a password. 

"We're sorry for the inconvenience around changing your password; Last.fm takes your privacy very seriously," the site reads. "We'll be posting updates in our forums and via our Twitter account (@lastfm) as we get to the bottom of this."

Last.fm is owned by CBS, the parent company of CBSNews.com.

LinkedIn and eHarmony said Wednesday that some of their users' passwords appeared to have been leaked online.

LinkedIn did not say how many of the over 6 million passwords that were distributed online corresponded to LinkedIn accounts. In a blog post Wednesday, the company said it was still investigating. EHarmony also posted a statement Wednesday, saying the site has reset the passwords of the affected users and that those users would receive an email with instructions on how to set new passwords.
