Lady Gaga sues company over use of her name
(CBS/AP) There's only one Lady Gaga -- and she wants to keep it that way. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, better known by her stage name Lady Gaga, is suing Excite Worldwide LLC for using her name on its cosmetic and jewelry products. The lawsuit claims that the company has filed to trademark the names "Lady Gaga" and "Lady Gaga LG" without asking the pop star for her permission. Pictures: Lady Gaga Not only does she claim that it insinuates that she endorses these products, it also blocks Lady Gaga from using her name on products she might want to produce. The suit, filed in New York City, says Excite Worldwide is trying to take advantage of Gaga's rights "by filing frivolous applications" that stop the trademark efforts of the award-winning singer and her company Ate My Heart, Inc. "As long as someone is ahead of us on line -- even if they are on life support -- they are still blocking us," Pryor Cashman LLP attorney Brad D. Rose told WWD. He said Gaga is seeking injunctive relief and damages for any goods sold using her name. Lady Gaga also took legal action earlier this year when ice cream made out of breast milk was marketed under the name "Baby Gaga." The product has since been removed for hygienic reasons.
