The "Fame Monster" star now has 5,745,000 followers (as of Aug. 23) compared with 5,705,000 for Spears.

Gaga thanked her fans for helping her take the Twitter crown in a celebratory video posted to her YouTube over the weekend.

"Hello world -- this is Lady Gaga, queen of Twitter," said the star, donning a white lace hat adorned with the Twitter logo and waving a blue wand. "I wanted to thank all my beautiful little monsters for following me. Thank you for beginning my reign as Twitter queen."

"I vow never to partake in celebrity online shenaningans," Gaga continued, "and I vow to always tweet, and tweet again...just remember that I love you, and love yourself. 'Cause Little Monsters, you were born that way, baby. I love you, Twitter. See you at the Monster Ball."

Spears was the No. 1 celebrity on Twitter for three months after taking the top spot from Ashton Kutcher. However, Gaga is not going to hold the crown without a fight. According to Billboard.com, Internet research company famecount.com said that Justin Bieber - currently the No. 3 musician and No. 6 celebrity/public figure on Twitter with 4,706,000 followers - is the fastest growing star on the site. He is adding almost 800,000 new followers a month.

Gaga was toppled by Justin Bieber on YouTube for the title of most viewed YouTube video of all-time after his single "Baby" eclipsed "Bad Romance" in July with 296,980,000 views (as of Aug. 23).
