Knicks Get Sharp Shooter Scott

Just days after trading offensive catalyst John Starks to the Golden State Warriors, the New York Knicks today signed veteran swingman Dennis Scott, one of the top 3-point shooters in league history.

Terms of the deal were undisclosed. Scott collected $2.92 million last season.

  • An eight-year veteran, Scott should provide New York another outside option to complement star center Patrick Ewing. He has hit nearly 40 percent of his shots from behind the arc and in 1995-96 set an NBA single-season record for 3-pointers with 267.

Scott averaged 11.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game in 81 games for Dallas and Phoenix last season after spending his first seven campaigns with Orlando. The 30-year-old has scored 14.2 points per game during his career and has never averaged less than 10.

"We are pleased to be able to obtain a player of Dennis' caliber," Knicks general manager Ernie Grunfeld said. "He has been one of the league's most reliable scorers and an excellent threat from long range. He will add to our overall depth, especially as an outside shooter."

The signing of Scott is the latest move in a busy offseason for New York, which has added All-Star guard Latrell Spreewell and promising forward Marcus Camby.
