Kitchen Makeover A Dream
"I got an amazing amount of cabinets. They're beautiful," a very excited Nancy Maloney tells The Early Show co-anchor Hannah Storm.
For just over a month she has been unable to cook and her family has been eating in the living room. As the winners of the Dream Kitchen Makeover, The Maloney family kitchen has been under construction courtesy of Lowe's.
"I love cooking this time of year so I'm kind of missing that. But we've managed somehow," she says. "The kids have actually liked my refrigerator in the living room very close to the couch. It works well when you are watching a show."
So far the walls have been painted, the floor has been laid and, of course, two-tone cabinets have been installed.
"Two-tone — I wasn't sure about it at first because I've never seen it before, but now that it's in, put all together, it's gorgeous," Maloney says. "I have a lot of cabinets to fill and looking very forward to it. There are a lot of different things in the cabinets. Pot racks. I have a super cabinet, which is like a pantry cabinet. And it is just exciting. I can't wait to start putting things in it. Hopefully by the end of the week we will be doing that."
Before the makeover, only one wall of the kitchen held cabinets. Now, three walls have been filled with cabinets. Though on schedule, the job has not been an easy one. Unexpected hurdles included an electrical rewiring job that required a complete power upgrade for the home, which was needed to handle all the new appliances.
"There've been a lot of people in and out," Nancy Maloney's husband, John, says. "A bunch of nice guys. We've had real good luck with them. Just going like that, real nice."
Of the new appliances she is getting, the dishwasher is the one Nancy Maloney looks forward to use the most.
"I can't wait to scrape the plates and throw them in the dishwasher," she says. She's also getting a garbage disposal. "It's going to be quite a change, but a welcomed one. I think come the holidays, it's going to be very useful. Every day will be useful. But I'm very excited about the dishwasher."
The kitchen area is not the only place that is getting a makeover. The side entry foyer, which at one time accommodated an extra storage freezer, has now been incorporated into the overall kitchen design.
"I've got my fridge in the cellar," John Maloney says. "I think it's going to stay down there."
The foyer has been transformed into a dining area, which will allow more freedom of movement in the kitchen. A movable island will now reside in the kitchen's center, creating yet another workspace for a big and busy family.
So what will Nancy Maloney cook once her kitchen is ready?
"If it were up to my kids, my oldest son, it would be chili. Not very gourmet, but that will probably be the first request," she says.
