Killing over $40 Super Bowl bet brings 50 years in Texas prison, prosecutors say
(CBS/AP) FORT WORTH - Prosecutors say a North Texas gang member has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for a 2011 killing over an unpaid $40 Super Bowl bet.
Last week, a jury in Fort Worth convicted 19-year-old Clevin Earl Brown Jr. of murder and engaging in organized criminal activity. On Monday, jurors ordered 50-year prison terms for each count, with the sentences to be served concurrently.
Investigators say 20-year-old Jarami Thomas was shot and killed in March 2011 in the parking lot of an Arlington convenience store. According to the Dallas Morning News, Brown and several other members of a street gang called Lynch Mob, ambushed Thomas on March 14, 2011 after promising he could settle the bet he made via Facebook by fighting one of the members.
Edward Washington, 18, handled Thomas's bet. He is still in jail and awaiting trial on charges of engaging in organized criminal activity and murder.
