Some facts about Kenya and Tanzania, the two East African countries where bombs damaged U.S. embassies Friday:

KENYA:
  • Land: Covers 220,000 square miles on eastern coast of Africa straddling the equator, including snowcapped mountains, barren deserts, and tropical beaches. About twice the size of Nevada.
  • People: Population of about 28 million. English and Swahili are official languages, several other dialects spoken. Majority of country is Christian.
  • Economy: Has seen some growth in recent years, but faces substantial barriers to development, including electricity shortages, the government's continued dominance of key sectors, and endemic corruption.
  • Government: A British colony until 1963. President Daniel arap Moi, 78, has led the nation since 1966, and won re-election in December 1997.

TANZANIA:
  • Land: Largest country in East Africa, covering 364,000 square miles, about twice the size of California. Includes Mount Kilimanjaro, highest point in Africa at 19,300 feet.
  • People: About 29 million. English and Swahili are official languages, many local languages. About 45 percent of people are Christian, 35 percent Muslim.
  • Economy: Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world. The economy is heavily dependent on agriculture, and its main exports are coffee and cotton.
  • Government: Led for three decades by President Julius Nyerere.
