Kenny Rogers sues Capitol Records over royalties
(CBS) Kenny Rogers has apparently been counting his money - and is now going up against his own record label for payment.
"The Gambler" singer filed a lawsuit Monday against Capitol Records, claiming it hasn't dealt the right amount of cash for digital downloads, ringtones and other uses of his songs, according to the Nashville City Paper.
He argues that under a 1977 deal, Capitol Records owes him half of net royalties for "pre-recorded magnetic tapes and all other non-disc records," according to the lawsuit. That includes licensing of his master recordings to third-parties, such as iTunes and Verizon Wireless, reports the Associated Press.
Rogers, who says he started an audit on Capitol back in 2007, argues the label owes him at least $400,000.
He's asking for restitution, compensatory damages and attorneys' fees.
Rogers is on the road this month and will next perform Feb. 19 in Orlando, Fla.
