Kenny G Pays Tribute
Here's a pop question: who is the top-selling solo instrumentalist of all time? Need a hint? The same artist holds the record for the top-selling holiday album of all time.
If you guessed Kenny G, you are correct. His latest album, Classics In The Key of G brings listeners a taste of some old favorites. He spoke with CBS This Morning Co-Anchor Mark McEwen about it.
"I think it's kind of a thank you album. It's a thank you to the guys that inspired me when I was a kid," says Kenny G.
While paying tribute to those who came before him, he hopes to introduce a new generation to some old standards. "I know a lot of people like my music and I'm grateful for that, but now I think I have a responsibility to say, 'hey, I'm glad you like my music, but a lot what I'm doing came from listening to these guys'," he says.
While the album takes a look at the past, it will benefit the future. All proceeds from its first single will help fund school music programs through the Kenny G Miracles Foundation.
"I want to give kids the same opportunities that I had in school, and to have access to music programs and musical instruments, and to be inspired," he says.
Although he has achieved chart-topping success and has sold more than 30 million albums, Kenny G says he's no celebrity. "I know my face is recognizable and I know people like my music, but to me all I am is a saxophone player and I just want to keep growing and learning about how to be a better saxophone player," he says.
The album's first single is a "virtual duet" with Louis Armstrong on the song "What A Wonderful World."
