Katie Couric's Notebook: Holy War

When it comes to health care reform, Catholic bishops say the devil is in the details.

They and other anti-abortion advocates oppose the Senate version of the bill - claiming it provides federal funding for abortions.

Today, a Holy War began. Catholic nuns issued a letter to lawmakers endorsing the bill - saying the bishops got it wrong.

The Hyde Amendment bans federal funding for abortions...except in cases of rape, incest or if the health of the mother is in danger. The bill doesn't change that, but if passed Americans could use subsidies to buy into a private health plan that covers abortions....paid for though, by separate premiums...not taxpayer dollars.

Abortion opponents...like the nuns and bishops...are divided on whether that's simply too close for comfort. But the bill will give pregnant women access to affordable care...ensuring their health and the health of their unborn children.

And according to the nuns...that is the, quote, real pro-life stance.

That's a page from my notebook.
