(CBS) Last month, it was reported that the Duchess of Cambridge was on the lookout for charities she could support. Now, she's taken on her first one.

The former Kate Middleton has officially been named a patron of the Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry, the palace announced on Tuesday.

Her position was approved at a board of trustees meeting on Sept. 29. Trustees are reportedly considering a name change for the foundation, to reflect the Duchess of Cambridge's new role.

The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry is used to raise funds for causes that the princes (and now, Kate) support.

"The Foundation is the culmination of The Princes' charitable lives so far. Now with The Duchess of Cambridge they intend to use the Foundation as the main vehicle for their future charitable activities and that, by raising sustainable sources of funds, it will be able to make charitable grants," an announcement from the palace read. "The Foundation has collaborated with two organizations to date (Fields in Trust and ARK), but the intention is to continue to concentrate on building up its reserves and capacity rather than making donations in the short term."

Kate's appointment to the charity was celebrated last week after she and Prince William opened a children's cancer ward at Royal Marsden Hospital, People reports, when she joined the princes at a reception at St. James' Palace.
