Justin Bieber was reportedly knocked to the ground by a man who jumped a barricade while the singer was signing autographs outside a New York City department store on Thursday, but it now seems that the incident might have been a misunderstanding.

TMZ reports that that the man was a plainclothes officer who was trying to help the singer when the crowd outside the Macy's in Herald Square became unruly. Bieber did not know the man was a cop, and got defensive and thought he was a crazed fan.

A member of Bieber's security team tried to pull the man away, according to the report. The cop identified himself and cited the security team member for disorderly conduct.

The 17-year-old was at the department store to promote his new fragrance, "Someday," and went outside to acknowledge fans that didn't make it inside for the event. Witnesses said that an unidentified man then leaped over the barrier and tackled the star.

Bieber was uninjured but appeared to be "shaken up" by the incident, according to local news reports. TMZ reports that the two sides straightened things out after the incident and Bieber went back inside to sign autographs.

Earlier in the day, the singer appeared on "The View," and read the Top 10 list on the "Late Show with David Letterman" the day before.
