Junior Ams Awarded To Texas
Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas, has been chosen as the host site for the 2001 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, the United States Golf Association has announced. The Championship will be played from July 24-28.
Designed by A.W. Tillinghast and redesigned by Jay Morrish in 1984, Oak Hills opened for play in 1922. It will be the second club in the San Antonio area scheduled to host a USGA Championship.
Oak Hills, however, has a strong tradition of championship golf, having hosted the PGA Texas Open for 21 years, lastly in 1994 when Texas native Bob Estes was the winner. It also held an NCAA Regional championship in 1997. The course layout covers 6,650 yards with a par of 71. Oak trees line the fairways and water hazards come into play on at least six holes.
"Oak Hills is proud to be chosen as the host site for the 2001 U.S. Junior Amateur, one of the fastest growing national amateur championships," said Jim Reed, general chairman of the championship. "This is something special for Oak Hills and the entire San Antonio community."
Prior to 2001, the U.S. Junior Amateur will be conducted from July 27-31-1999, at York Country Club in York, Pa., and in July 2000 at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.
