JonBenet Investigator Resigns

A retired homicide detective hired as a special investigator in the JonBenet Ramsey slaying has resigned.

Lou Smit, who cut his work week down to 25 hours in July because of an illness to his wife, resigned this week. Suzanne Laurion of the district attorney's office said Thursday, "Beyond that, we cannot comment on personnel matters."

Smit's resignation follows the departure last month of Boulder Detective Steve Thomas. Thomas released a scathing eight-page resignation letter in which he accused District Attorney Alex Hunter of bungling the case.

Meanwhile, a Boulder grand jury completed its fourth day of investigating the unsolved killing of the child beauty queen. The grand jury has been hearing from detectives involved with the case.

There have been no arrests since the 6 year old was found beaten and strangled in the basement of her family's Boulder home on Dec. 26, 1996.
