Joanne Marie Jones Cold Case Murder: Nevada man arrested for 1985 Calif. killing of aspiring model
(CBS/AP) LOS ANGELES - Cold case detectives have tracked down a suspect in the fatal 1985 stabbing of Joanne Marie Jones, an aspiring model from Long Beach.
Stafford Joel Spicer was arrested Wednesday in Las Vegas on suspicion of killing the 23-year-old Jones. Her body was discovered by hikers in a remote area of Azusa Canyon on June 8, 1985.
Spicer was first arrested several days after the killing when he was spotted driving Jones' car, but there was not enough evidence to pursue murder charges and he was released.
Cold case detectives reopened the case in 2009. They were able to uncover DNA evidence and presented it to prosecutors, who then charged Spicer in the 25-year-old murder case.
Spicer is awaiting extradition to California.
