JFK Jr's Marriage On Rocks?
The "fairy tale" marriage of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette was collapsing at the time of their deaths, reports The New York Post in its Sunday editions.
The tabloid newspaper, quoting "sources close to the couple," said Bessette believed Kennedy was having affairs, and had contacted divorce lawyers. The two had not slept together for 18 months before their fatal plane trip to Martha's Vineyard in mid-July, and he had ordered her out of their apartment just two days before the crash.
The Post story cites "members of Kennedy's close-knit circle of friends and associates of Carolyn - including two who have signed sworn affidavits."
These insiders say Rory Kennedy's wedding on Martha's Vineyard that weekend would have been their last public appearance before their separation was announced.
The final straw, according to the reports, was when Carolyn stormed out of a joint therapy session four days before they died, then disappeared for two nights.
"He had been trying to save his marriage right up until four days before he died," the paper quoted a friend as saying.
Kennedy, 38, Bessette, 34, and her sister Lauren died July 16 when the single-engine airplane he was piloting crashed into the ocean during a night flight from northern New Jersey.
The Post reports that Bessette was very jealous and unable to cope with pressure of her marriage.
"Suddenly she was Mrs. John F. Kennedy Jr. and not just the live-in girlfriend," said a friend close to Kennedy, "and she reacted like a frightened deer caught in car headlights."
The friends say one divorce attorney she contacted hired private detectives to trail Kennedy, but they came up empty. Contacted by The Post, the lawyer denied he had worked for Bessette.
After the aborted therapy session, Kennedy moved into a New York City hotel. However, Carolyn's sister Lauren met with him for two hours at his office, acting as mediator for the couple. Lauren offered to accompany them on the trip to the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport, Mass. She would be dropped off at Martha's Vineyard, and wait for them there until after the wedding.
A friend of Kennedy, who told the paper Kennedy broke down several times when telling him about his marital problems, said he was speaking out because "John would have wanted me to.
"I want the world to know that it was not a marriage made in heaven."
