(CBS) Jesse James has been making the media rounds to promote his memoir, "American Outlaw," and is opening up about ex Sandra Bullock and new fiancee Kat Von D.

"I think I wanted to get caught. It was me trying to self sabotage my life," James told "Nightline" of the infidelity that ended his marriage to Bullock.

"I think, you know, a marriage ending, all this crazy stuff...that was like a lesson to work on myself and fix what's wrong with me," he added in the interview, which aired Wednesday. "So I don't transfer it and keep it going, like my parents did."

He also revealed that he doesn't get to see Louis, the baby he and Bullock planned to adopt before the divorce, whom the actress ultimately adopted as a single parent.

"I could only cry so much about him until I have to, like, suck it up and keep a stiff upper lip, and realize, hey, I have three kids that I do have," he said.

James, 42, and "L.A. Ink" star Von D got engaged in January, and he told People magazine that he's sure the tattoo artist, 29, is his soul mate.

"We have something special that I've never felt with anyone I've ever been with," he said. "She loves me like no woman ever has, 100 percent. Man, she has my back."

"We fell in love at the worst possible time. I'm being chased around [by paparazzi] like a dog and here comes this angel," he added. "Not only does she love me, but she loves me so much that she was willing to subject herself to everything that I was going through and [endure] all the ridicule that she got for being with me."

"She fell in love with me when I was being called Satan," he also told the magazine. "If that's not a testament to what kind of a person she is and where her intentions are, I think nothing is."

"American Outlaw" was released on Tuesday.
