Jean Dinning, author of song "Teen Angel," dies at 86

(CBS/AP) Songwriter Jean Dinning, who wrote the teen tragedy hit "Teen Angel," died on Feb. 22. She was 86.

Daughter Cynthia Wygal tells the Orange County Register that her mother died in Garden Grove.

The hit song was released in October 1959 by Dinning's brother Mark and became an instant hit. Sha-Na-Na performed it at the Woodstock Music Festival in 1969.

The song is about a girl who dies in a tragic railroad train accident. In the song, the girl and her boyfriend successfully escape from their car that stalls on the train tracks, but the girl returns to get her boyfriend's class ring and doesn't make it back in time.

Dinning is survived by her sisters Ginger and Dolores; children Shay Edwards, Cynthia Wygal, Howard Mack, Ronald Surrey and David Surrey; eight grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for May 21 in Nashville, Tenn.
