Although Judge Douglas C. Phimister refrained from commenting on the doctor's role in the competency hearing, The Los Angeles Times reports that the appointed expert is an expert in "malingering" which is a medical term that refers to the fabrication or exaggeration of symptoms of mental or physical disorders for some kind of gain.
Garrido's competency hearing is scheduled for March.
Garrido, who is already undergoing psychological evaluation, has been charged with rape and kidnapping in Dugard's 1991 disappearance.
Dugard was 11 at the time of the abduction, and resurfaced in 2009 after being held captive for 18 years.
During her captivity Dugard bore two children, and according to court documents, Garrido is their father.
Since his arrest, Garrido and his wife Nancy have been held in the El Dorado County jail.
